Military affairs.

It's Bonaparte's Wedding Anniversary today. In 1796, he married Josephine de Beauharnais in a civil ceremony at a hotel in Paris.

So there.

If it's good enough for Bonaparte, it's just fine for all those couples who do it in Las Vegas wedding chapels. It's a gamble either way, I guess.

Still on matters French (sujects Francais?), this is the day on which King Louis Philipe founded the French Foreign Legion in 1831 - in part, to rid France of foreigners.

Talking of military matters, in 1974, this was the day that Hiroo Onada (51) emerged from the Philippine jungle where he had been hiding out for twenty-nine years after the end of World War 11, unaware that the war was over.

It's a wonder he wasn't killed crossing the street.
