“In the Moment – Buddhists of the Himalayas" - opens 5 February in Calgary.


Joe Englander’s remarkable record of Tibetan life is on view throughout February at Calgary's Art Central, 100-7th Avenue South West, and is already receiving enthusiastic support from the Tibetan Community of Alberta.

The esteemed lensman has been photographing, publishing, and exhibiting for over 25 years with conspicuous success, working in all pictographic formats from 35mm to 8x10.

Since 1980, he has been producing color and black-and-white photography for commercial and artistic projects, his efforts being recognized nationally and internationally.

He has also gained a reputation as a teacher of the art, conducting photographic workshops since 1981.

Joe Englander is one of the small band who helped photography become accepted as a genuine art form. His pictures are in numerous permanent collections and can be found in a growing number of private collections across North America.

His photographs can be found in Yale University Art Gallery, Lakeview Museum of Art, The Duke University Museum of Art, Tucson Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute Museum of Art, Rice University Sewall Art Gallery, The Denver Art Museum, The Art Museum and Galleries of California State University, and the Chicago Center for Contemporary Photography.

As part of Calgary's Exposure 2009 Photography Festival, Joe will also be giving a presentation titled Photography of the Environment/The Environment of Photography in the Stanford Perrott Lecture Theatre at the Alberta College of Art.
