The Bregenz Festival's presentation of Verdi's "Aida" attracted record attendance this summer - thanks to a spectacular stage set which included two giant blue feet and a giant golden floating elephant. Created by British theatre designers Paul Brown and Graham Vick, the set proved a worthy successor to previous presentations.
Last year's stage design with its giant "Tosca eye" was also the setting for seven minutes of action in the James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace." This year's eye-catching backdrop aroused similar interest.
Festival officials reported 259,084 visitors and that ninety-eight per cent of tickets for this summer's event were sold.
The previous attendance record had been 230,000 in 2003.
Festival officials said 201,258 people attended the various performances presented on a huge floating stage on Lake Constance. Ninety-nine per cent of tickets were sold achieving the best attendance in the festival's sixty-four-year history.
The three opera productions by English Opera North Leeds drew 2,517 viewers, six hundred more than last year, who bought seventy-three per cent of available tickets.
