Bernini: Apollo and Daphne, detail, 1622–25.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini, (born 7th December, 1598, Naples, Kingdom of Naples
[Italy]—died 28th November, 1680, Rome, Papal States), was probably the greatest
sculptor of the Seventeenth century as well as being an outstanding architect.
Bernini created the Baroque style of sculpture and developed it to such an extent
that other artists are of only minor importance in any discussion of that style.
