New York City-based artist Kumi Yamashita creates extremely labour-intensive portraits from simple materials. Her “Constellation” portraits are each made of a single thread wound around a network of nails, in a process that takes several months. To make her “Warp and Weft” portraits, Yamashita selectively cuts away threads from denim fabric. Her work was on display at the Scott White Contemporary Art gallery in La Jolla, California, from 20th April through 1st June 1, 2013. She has much more work on her website.
