For the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association 16th Annual Exhibition & Sale, opening on 10th October in Oklahoma City, saddlemaker Chuck Stormes created this highly original longhorn mount.
It began with the creation of a full-size, stylized Longhorn skull, sculpted in wood, to be fitted with the massive horns.
Over this was moulded the elaborately carved leather covering in fine saddle leather.

The decorative leather carving depicts - most appropriately - the marigolds that grow in wild profusion in Northern Mexico, providing a fitting motif to salute the famous breed.
The horn mounting, which measures five feet, seven inches - or just over one hundred and seventy centimetres - from tip to tip, is one of two Stormes pieces in the show, which continues till 4th January, 2015. The Millarville, Alberta craftsman is one of more than a dozen traditional cowboy artists represented in the "Cowboy Crossings" exhibition, which also includes works from some of North America's finest western painters and sculptors.
