Pino Daeni: 1939 - 2010

Pino Daeni died on 25th May, 2010.

The Italian artist is best-known for his work in the United States where his traditional style was much in demand for book illustration and stylish advertising concepts.

His paintings are often set on the sunny beaches of the Mediterranean where he grew up and gained an early reputation.

Born Giuseppe Dangelico, he was trained at the Art Institute of Bari, and later at Milan’s Academy of Brera. His skills painting nudes and figure studies reflect the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and Macchiaioli.

After establishing himself as a successful artist in his native land, Pino emigrated to the United States, seeking more artistic freedom and opportunity. He was soon discovered by the distinguished Borghi Gallery, which gave several exhibitions for him in New York and Boston.

Pino's early paintings featured soft, romantic characters - mostly women dressed in flowing skirts and dresses; and these caught the attention of both Dell and Zebra Book Publishers.

In 1980, Zebra commissioned him to do his first book cover. Thereafter, his popularity grew within the literary community and he became the artist-in-demand for Zebra, Bantam, Simon, and Schuster, Harlequin, Penquin USA and Dell.

To date, Pino has illustrated three thousand books; his style dominating the market.

In the United States, The Art Shop of Greensboro, North Carolina, is one of his most enthusiastic supporters and devotes a large portion of its gallery and its website to displaying his works.
