California-based artists Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector used around three hundred and forty bicycles and a tricycle to built the Ciclysk in Santa Rosa.
While the newly-erected Ciclysk may be seen as an encouragement for people to ride bikes instead of driving cars, its funding actually came from the “One per cent-for-public-art” that Nissan paid to open a big car dealership just south of where the odd obelisk is now located. Santa Rosa currently has a law that requires one per cent of every major construction project to be donated to public art.
Artist Mark Grieve says he only used parts that were beyond being used on a functional bike. The as-new appearance is achieved by a special coating that will keep the pillar colourful for a long time. Bicycle parts were all donated by members of the Santa Rosa community who enthusiastically contributed to the creation of their city’s newest landmark.
